An Overview on Autism

Autism is a condition where the kids are mentally affected; rather they are not normal mentally that is characterized by their behavior with regards to communication and gelling with others. This condition is also known as Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) where the brain development of an individual is affected right from the childhood.  Autism can be seen with in the first three years of an individual. Kids, affected by autism can be seen often isolated and it seems that they are into a shell which can be broken with hard efforts.

Autism Spectrum disorder training can be given to bring the child out of the shell in his own ways. Teachers are trained and educationally qualified to handle kids affected by autism. Parents of such kids need not worry. Little bit of fine tuning in the right way, can help special kids perform well even in their academics. Autism kids find it difficult to communicate, or at times express their feelings. They lack social interaction and fail to understand a relationship and any set of rules laid that has to be followed. Such kids, may not be able to follow non-verbal communication ie; facial expressions, sign language etc. They can’t be imaginative. Most of their acts will be copied and repetitive. They love objects than people. They may lack grip over an object. Autism kids can feel comfortable with familiar people but, they can’t with stand crowd.

When teachers take up Autism Spectrum disorder training, certain things have to be remembered for effective training. Training them the normal way may never be of help. Consider the following as tips for training special kids suffering from autism.

  • Anything you ask these kids to do should be in a sequential order. It has to be really specific and to the point.
  •  Use very simple language while giving instructions. Never form huge sentences. The kid will find it difficult to follow. Keep it short and sweet and also clear as far as possible.
  • Avoid sarcasm completely. Autistic kids take literal meanings of what you say. You need to literally watch out on what you speak. Appreciation truly helps in getting better results.
  • Any usage of idioms will leave the students perplexed. If they look at you wonderstruck, it clearly shows that they didn’t get what you said.
  • Giving many choices, will leave the students confused again. Just give few choices and they will be able to decide their activity. Don’t ask “what do you want to do?” Instead, give them choices.
  • After you give an instruction, asking them what they understood will help you to know their level of understanding.
  • Try and set daily routine for such kids for better results.
  • Visual displays, photos will prove to be effective. For instance, instead of telling that this is how the place or picture should look, show them a visual display as they can understand that better.

Autism Spectrum disorder training, when done with keen interest and sincerity, will definitely yield amazing results. As part of training, understanding each and every student individually is quite a necessity as the capability of one autistic kid to another does vary. Autism is no big deal when handled the right way.
